Training is back on the rails!
Issa (#1)
11/16/20 6:16 pm
After a wild weekend here on FFH, we’re finally making progress on planned projects! Training has reopened for everyone - but don’t rush off to the track (or trails) before taking a moment to read about the training updates. For starters, I want to stress that you really don’t need to make any changes to what you’re already doing! This mostly changes the way things look and the way numbers interact in scripts, but does not change the core mechanics behind when, where, or how you train.

Distance Training
Distance training is the biggest change for the training system. We’ve streamlined the distance training process as well as the way distances function throughout the site. The most important thing to note about these changes is that horses will now gain proficiency at the distance you train as well as neighboring distances. If you train a horse for 8F, they would gain a large amount of proficiency at 8F, but would also receive a small improvement to 7F and 9F. All horses gain proficiency at similar rates across all distances, regardless of prior training, with the exception of favorite distance where they receive a bonus. This applies during any training that normally improves distances as well as in buddy workouts.

At each month’s rollover, all horses will lose proficiency at different rates depending upon their distance genes. This is where you will notice horses with better distance aptitude pulling ahead and being able to easily juggle proficiency across a broader spectrum, while horses with lower aptitude will struggle to maintain proficiency at more than a distance or two.

Sound familiar? In the long run, this all works very much like distance training always had - with a couple of exceptions! For starters, horses are no longer born with a limit to their distance range, meaning any horse can, in theory, have some level of proficiency at every distance. (Remember, however, that aptitude will factor into this!) You may now only lock a horse to one distance rather than locking them to a range. Finally, you may no longer ‘X’ distances to remove them; if you want to train a new distance you simply start training it!

Along with this, we’ve updated the proficiency bar (on Horse page) and star (on Exercise page) colors. With the inclusion of a new grey color, there are now 4 categories of training a horse can fall into: grey - 0-24% (Poor), red - 25-49% (Fair), yellow - 50-74% (Average), green - 75-100% (Excellent). Although green is most ideal and will reward your horse with the best PR in races and no chance of injury, yellow-range proficiency is acceptable with insignificant chance of injury. Entering races at distances where a horse has red or grey proficiency should generally be avoided.

Distance Aptitude
Along with changes in training, there has also been a tiny tweak to how horses inherit favorite distance based upon their aptitude genes. As a reminder, we have added 100 and 900 yard options for stock horses, which will start showing up in bred 2 year olds, yearlings, and any other horses created since that change went in.

However, only in certain circumstances will horses have 4F, 12F, 100yd, or 900yd favorite distances! They must have Outstanding Speed or Stamina (respective to the distance) and Fair or Poor for the opposite gene. For example, a horse with Outstanding Speed and Fair Stamina will inherit a 4F/100yd favorite distance and a horse with Poor Speed and Outstanding Stamina will inherit a 12F/900yd favorite distance.

Additionally, we have made some adjustments to how juvenile favorite distances are determined - sprinters will no longer have a shortened favorite and milers/routers have changed accordingly. Three year olds no longer have a shortened favorite and will run and train best at their mature distance.

Style Proficiency
Horses have 3 shiny new bars just below their stats/stars on their main page. These are known as Style Proficiency and there is one for each style: Frontrunner, Midpack, and Closer. Horses improve their proficiency in a style when performing buddy workouts or entering races. It should be noted that races improve style proficiency faster, although 2 year olds gain proficiency slower across the board. Similar to many other traits on FFH, style proficiency is constantly in flux and will decline over time.

Style proficiency benefits horses in two ways. First, it will determine how much style bonus they receive in races. Secondly, unmaxed horses have a chance to gain bonus stats when training based upon their style proficiency. Frontrunner proficiency increases odds of bonuses during Breeze-Gallop intervals, Midpack increases bonuses for Track and Trail Rides, and Closer increases bonuses during Gallop-Breeze intervals.

Style proficiency never contributes to injury risk. There is nothing wrong with entering a horse who has 0% (or otherwise low) proficiency. Although their PR may suffer, this can be a useful training tactic!

Track & Trail Rides
In addition to the new bonuses from Midpack proficiency, Track and Trail Rides have received their own little ‘glow up’! Track Rides now improve a horse’s Experience while Trail Rides a horse’s Rest. This makes both a more valuable part of your regular routine!

Two Year Olds
Ahhh, babies… Silly little youngsters! We have long been working on ways to balance things for two year olds and we’ve definitely seen progress in updates made in the past few years. However, we recognize that exhaustion penalties, by and large, have not been well-received. They can feel punishing to those who click an extra training accidentally, yet don’t really do enough to deter others from training into exhaustion on a regular basis. Based on these observations, we have removed all exhaustion penalties.

Instead, training two year olds now takes more Energy. This includes the first intervals or Gate Training - which will always take 10% Energy. The only training options that remain ‘free’ for the first training of the month are Maintenance and Saddle Training. Bear in mind that entering at 80-90% Energy does not increase injury risk, so a two year old may still perform an interval (or Gate Training) and enter safely.

Weather Forecasts
This change isn’t related to training but it’s going to sneak in anyway! Weather icons at tracks now represent a forecast of anticipated weather. As with real forecasts, the actual weather may vary. This will never be an extreme variation, but a slight change in once direction or another. In other words, a sunny track is never going to end up with a thunderstorm, but a cloudy track might end up with a little rain or a track expecting rain might end up relatively dry.

Distances will take a while to wrap my head around - but extremely pleased with the removal of exhaustion penalties. Hopefully training 2yos will feel far less punishing now! Also the weather forecast is a nice addition too.

Some fascinating changes and additions! I always kind of wished training a certain distance would at least improve the ones shorter than it, so this is even better. The weather is a nice little change too. But grateful there won't be any Derby-like sunny forecasts that result in downpours! ;)

Wow what a big update! I think I'm really going to like these distances changes. Not so sure about the energy loss for 2yos since energy gains have already been decreased recently but we will see how it goes

OMgosh, wonderful changes here... my favorite is the removal of exhaustion penalties(how many times i almost cried for that mistaken click). At first glace I was like hummm, not liking only one distance to set for racing, then realized i hardly ever race outside of favorite distance so i see that making entering even faster, nice. Gonna take me a bit to det the distance aptitude under my belt but excited to do so, i see that as soo interesting and cant wait to see how it impacts my horses. I'm also very excited about gaining bonus during training on Style proficiency. so many exciting updates. thanks again for all the hard work your putting into this most excellent game....

I'm glad that exhaustion penalties have been removed, but I'm a bit worried about retraining distances for 3rd leg of Trinities: they go 10f-9f-12f, so it's not really possible to start training in advance. Before we were just removing and retraining distances.

In fact I am very much liking the changes I have yet to encounter. Will have to see how it plays out in the long run but my first reaction is overwhelmingly positive.

A few minor adjustments have been made to Stallion Grades and stallions will need retested. Notably - Since SS/Import/Custom cannot be the worst level of 'Average', they may still earn B grades. Horses with tested negative mutations also cannot grade higher than C unless tested AA+ PQ. This info has been updated in the Handbook as well. Thanks for your patience!

The Stallion Grade system has been updated and testing is open again. These updates offer more flexibility in factors that have less impact on a foal's potential while placing more weight on factors that have a stronger impact on a foal's potential. The Handbook page has also been updated, though the most notable change is that tested Average PQ cannot grade higher than C.
