FFH News
A Fairly Fantastic Future
Issa (#1)
08/31/20 11:34 pm
Greetings all our fantastic FFH-ians! I hope everyone had an excellent off season, is enjoying their foal flood and is ready for a new full season to begin! We do have a quick update we wanted everyone to have a heads up about!

As a game we have always taken strides to maintain an even playing field among our entire player demographic, and in the last few years we have been working to make two year old and three year old races fair and unbiased for all of our players. We’ve made some small adjustments here and there, but based on our recent research and insights, they don’t seem to be enough to achieve the balance we seek. So, in the interest of keeping FFH enjoyable for everyone, we have decided to implement limitations on item use for two year olds and three year olds.

Blazing Horseshoes, Frozen Horseshoes, Goggles, Happyballs, Slurpits, Jump Standards and Grandma’s Samplers will be the only items, excluding items that add markings, that can be used on horses aged 3 and under going forward. Additionally Alfalfa Cubes and Mineral Blocks are now only available for horses aged 4 and older – all other supplements will work as normal.

We’ve also made a few minor adjustments to PR calculations to further our balancing efforts. This does not involve any changes that should be of concern to anyone, but may result in you seeing slightly different (probably lower) PRs as a whole. One key component of these changes is a revision of the style bonus – although important, style scores will no longer contribute as much toward PR.

Our hope going forward is that all players can feel competitive in series races – particularly Gems, Midsummer Futurities, and Trinities. These changes should help center the attention on the importance of strong breeding foundations and training practices.

We also had a small update a couple weeks ago that slipped past the news. The first tier of exhaustion will no longer reduce Soundness, meaning there are no long-term detrimental impacts if you accidentally overtrain your horses.

These seem like they should be good things, although I am too new to know. And I have a barn full of far below average 3yo lol.

Love the exhaustion update. It will be interesting to see how the item limitations shake up Series Races. Waiting with bated breath to see how the PR adjustments will change up my racers’ PRs.

I'm feeling tentatively positive about this change, especially since we can still use any of the regular feeds on 2-3yos. I feel like that perhaps requires more strategy than just throwing PC items at young horses, since everyone has access to them & you can only feed a horse once per month anyway. I'm especially glad I won't have to worry about alfalfa much at all anymore. It had crossed my mind that it's going to be harder to come by now with Rusty having a daily limit.

I'm also very glad to see that slightly overtraining a horse won't result in a soundness ding. That upset me pretty badly when it first went in. The other penalties bother me less in the case of accidentally overtraining, since you can regain lost morale and so on.

These all sound like awesome changes! I'm excited to see how this affects the Gems and trinities. Also really happy to hear about the overtraining changes as I've done it accidently before and it was so sad

I am in love with the exhaustion update! Thank you for that! I rarely use items (except for Blazing or Frozen horseshoes of course) for younger horses as it is (though I did do a lot of alfalfa cubes in the past I don't use them as much anymore) so the changes to supplements doesn't really bother me much, if at all. I am very thrilled to see that these limitations will help even out the playing field and give everyone an equal chance at winning the big races! I am very curious to see how PRs look in the coming season, especially with style bonus revisions. Thanks again for all the hard work, guys!

Super excited about the exhaustion update. Outside of the allfalfa cubes I hardly ever use those on my youngsters anyways so now I’ll have them for my studs as needed. Can’t wait to see if the training instead of items makes a difference in my baby string.

I love the exhaustion update! Thank you for that! And I'm really excited about item limitation, it will be interesting to see if it actually helps those players who don't use many items if at all.

Love the exhaustion thing. I did have some issues with the soundness thing last year, mistakes where made, and have some 3yos who lost 1-3 soundness from it. So that being change is nice. Will be interesting to see how the changes to 2-3yos will pan out as well as the changes to PRs. Think the biggest impact this will have is not being able to use alfalfa cubes on my 2yos in january, and maybe not being able to use the spicey cider to quickly add a distance for the GC or trinity.

I really wish the exhaustion system would be reworked as I find it convoluted and tedious. If you are going to erode the biggest penalties of it then we will eventually be back to the previous system of spam training until the energy bar is empty. Instead, why not increase the amount of energy each training takes to limit the number of trainings everyone can do? Or just give every horse a set number of trainings per month (say each horse can be trained 3 times, any combination of your choice but only a max of 3). This would even things out between players who min-max training and those who don't and it would remove the "feels bad" moments like when you unexpectedly hit exhaustion on a horse at 70% because you forgot to triple check its age (I've become very annoyed at my 3yos).

Beginning to see the changes, and I do like this. I do believe this adjustment will ‘level’ the field. To help avoid paying money tp succeed.
Skylark (#4053)
09/10/20 3:22 pm
I'm mostly okay with these changes, but I do wish that Truffles could still be used on 3yr olds. Other than a small chance of gaining prime from a BW, or putting them out to pasture for a chance, there really isn't a good way for them to regain prime. This puts those 3yr olds behind everyone else. I understand most of the items being restricted to older horses, but not Truffles.
