Thanks to everyone who has participated in the community discussion forums this weekend! I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to stop and chat with us and guide the course of FFH. If you've missed the discussions, you can still stop by the channel and read. The starting prompts are mostly pinned, so you can easily find them and go from there. Feel free to ping me or any other mod if you'd like to jump in late to add anything. :)

However, I want to be sure everyone on FFH gets a chance to see the main part of today's discussion. I encourage you to go read this on Discsord, if you can, and the discussion that followed, which included more details about the ~new horse art~!

FFH is a game that we all, staff and players alike, cherish and enjoy - many of us year after year. Because we get so much enjoyment from this game, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that it is also a business - just like every other game out there. One of our core values is to be certain that our game never becomes pay to play, but at the same time, FFH must not only support its own costs such as server costs but it also needs to be worth the time and effort for the magicians behind the curtain - if it can do both of these things it can continue to thrive, grow and entertain us in the future.

Many often ask or wonder why development is done by a two-person team rather than hiring additional staff to get things done faster. We've always wanted to ensure we stay close to the heart of the game so that we can bring about the best changes for the game's longevity as well as the features players want. In addition, you've probably noticed FFH is a relatively small-scale game compared to others, which means it cannot support the expenses of hiring additional developers or artists at competitive wages - and we would never expect others to do the work we do for anything less than a competitive wage. (Ours is a bit of a labor of love.)

We, the developers, have many hopes and dreams to continue improving FFH, including some highly anticipated and inquired about features such as new art for all breeds and ages of horses, new jockey art, advanced stable skill tree, companion animal friends, the obstacle course feature, new and unique racing transition options for Goldbloods and Standardbreds, and more. Unfortunately, FFH is not consistently supporting itself and, with upcoming server renewal in mind, there is certainly no funding available to put toward these large-scale coding projects, art additions and other improvements you’d like to see.

For example, the breed art alone is estimated to take 500+ hours of time just from an art standpoint, plus additional hours to revamp the image system to work with different breeds. This means it’s, essentially, several months of work at even 30-40 hours a week. Before this project can be done, or at least while it is in progress, I must also allow time to focus on incomplete item art, assisting with coding and development, member engagement, and outside commission work that helps pay the bills. Likewise, the larger new features we have planned will take several weeks worth of consistent coding, not counting in time that is regularly set aside for fixing bugs and smaller improvements along the way.

At this point, you may be asking “how can I help?”. One way you can always help, without having to spend even a penny, is by participating in recruitment efforts. Did you know you earn Golden Apples for every referral you make? Did you know you also earn experience as your recruits level up? It’s as simple as posting one of the referral banners, or anything else of your choosing, on your profile, signature, or other public places on other games you play. You can also interact with our social media posts, which helps us stay at the top of the page and engage with new viewers. In addition, if you see newbies around, don’t be shy about sending them a welcome message or small gift. This makes them feel welcome and less intimidated by what is a rather complex game. Integration into the community is often a key part of member retention, as it makes it easier for new players to learn how to successfully play FFH.

In addition, your favorite (we are your favorite, right?) staff team has been putting together ideas for a fundraiser specifically to support new breed art. If members are open to this idea, we will be running a fundraiser with a special currency and special shop with some limited items/packages *only* available during the fundraiser. These items will be priced a little above what you’d normally value them, as the key point is not to sell items for discounted prices but to raise the funds needed to make a several-hundred hour commitment to new art.

We are also very open to your ideas and suggestions on ways we can continue going full steam ahead to make FFH the best game it can be! This will result in a more sustainable FFH which can then lead our staff team on to developing the other new games we’ve had pocketed for a long while.

Alternately, we could opt to put new FFH features and improvements on hold and shift our focus to new and promising developments, which will hopefully grow enough to support both themselves and FFH in its current (and future) state. This is, of course, not something we wish to do, but something we may be forced to do without proper funding for an FFH that can support itself.

I'd love a fundraiser to help FFH grow(and get cool items)! The staff here is so so so much better than any other game I've played, and we constantly appreciate how open you two are to let the members know what's going on behind the scenes!

It can be hard to justify spending money on a game sometimes, but once you factor in the amount of hours of entertainment (particularly compared to say PC/PS4 games) it seems much more reasonable. I will invest in FFH more often.

Prime has been broken and has not been declining at all for several game years. As a result, most horses have substantially more Prime than should be appropriate. (Ex: A 6yo who hit 100% Peak by the time they turned 4 should have lost 24+ Prime but has actually lost none.) Rather than setting all horses to what they should have, horses 5 and older will temporarily lose Prime twice as fast to accommodate.

A few minor adjustments have been made to Stallion Grades and stallions will need retested. Notably - Since SS/Import/Custom cannot be the worst level of 'Average', they may still earn B grades. Horses with tested negative mutations also cannot grade higher than C unless tested AA+ PQ. This info has been updated in the Handbook as well. Thanks for your patience!
Issa (#1)
10/10/23 11:13 pm
The Stallion Grade system has been updated and testing is open again. These updates offer more flexibility in factors that have less impact on a foal's potential while placing more weight on factors that have a stronger impact on a foal's potential. The Handbook page has also been updated, though the most notable change is that tested Average PQ cannot grade higher than C.
