Inbreeding |

Promised a very, very long time ago, inbreeding penalties have finally taken their final form. (Or at least something close to it!) Every horse's pedigree has been evaluated for inbreeding and the result can be viewed by clicking to view their pedigree from their main page. The inbreeding percentage can be explained as the percentage of their DNA influenced by inbreeding. If you breed a horse to its parent, for example, the resulting foal is 75% inbred since 75% of its DNA is coming from one horse. Foals who have 25% or higher inbreeding have an increased risk of negative genetic anomalies. The more severe their inbreeding, the greater the risk of anomalies. Typically only horses which show on a foal's pedigree matter for inbreeding. If their great-great-grandsire on their dam side is the same as a great-great-grandsire on their sire side, no inbreeding occurs since neither of those horses are visible on the foal's pedigree. However, if both of a foal's parents are inbred, they may pass strong enough inbreeding (25%+) to cause penalties in the foal. Horses with less than 25% inbreeding may still show an inbreeding percentage on their pedigree, but are not currently impacted by it. Any horse under 12.5% inbreeding is considered 'safe' and will automatically revert to 0% even if they technically had a miniscule amount of inbreeding. To help avoid inbreeding penalties, the Hypomate pedigree has been extended to show a full 3 generations of pedigree. It will also show a warning (like with Lethal Silver/Champagne Syndrome) if the cross would result in a foal with 25%+ inbreeding. Fret not! Although inbreeding percentages have been rolled for all existing horses, the genes and stats of existing horses have not been impacted by these changes. Only foals born from this year forward have the possibility of negative anomalies as discussed above. |

I like this change and I like that it’ll be viewable on hypomate, thanks for the update! |

Thank you for the advance warning, this mechanic should be really neat! I'm glad to hear it will only effect horses born going forward as I've bought a few inbred horses on accident. |

Thank you for the update! Glad the hypomate will give a warning just in case! |

Thanks for the update. And for the warning that this is happening. |

It's really interesting to see the developments in this game.
For the inbreeding of a foal is it a simple e.g. sire is 14%, dam is 20% so the foal is 7 + 10 = 17%? Or is it influenced by whether the same horse can be seen within the 3 generation pedigree on both sides? |
Meket Ra (#10903) Roseneath Stud Posted On: 02/01/24 4:41 pm |
Ooooh, interesting. I'm glad that the lower percentages are safe, since it's really common in real life to have a degree of inbreeding. |
Aya (#11587) Leviathan's Gate Posted On: 02/01/24 4:47 pm |
This seems like an excellent way to implement the mechanic. It's super easy to find the info on the pedigree and I really appreciate that there will be a warning for risk with breeding pairs. |

I felt it was coming after i saw today's message on discord. :) Thank you for the update. I must remember to consider COI once i start breeding on my own. Not all games pay attention to this aspect and im glad FFH is now the one that does it! |

Interesting! So glad the hypomate will give us a heads up, Im bad about double checking pedigree. Which is something I need to be better. Thanks for all the hard work you guys do. |

This is awesome! Thank you guys so much for working on this. I'm glad hypomate will show more; I've accidentally done inbreeding a time or two so it will be nice to have things available that will help me avoid it in the future |

Thanks for the update! I know I've been hearing rumors about this for forever, so it's nice to see it implemented. I'm glad we will have a warning in hypomate (because i've definitely made that oopsies inbreeding before). |

I think this update is a great addition to the game! Love that a warning will be provided on the hypomate to avoid any accidents! |

So just to be clear - foals born THIS YEAR are going to be impacted by this change? Even though we didn't know that it would impact our foals? I'm seeing mares with higher than 25% inbreeding but not visible on their lineage so I wouldn't have known that they would produce problematic foals. So just trying to know what I should be looking out for here. Thanks. |

I think this is quite an interesting addition and adds further realism into the game. Im interested to look through some of my mares. I've never intentionally inbred anyone but curious to see if any have slipped through the cracks haha. Thank you for the update and explanation. |

Zepheline (#9572) Moonlit Pastures Posted On: 02/02/24 2:14 am |
Thanks for the update :) Hopefully this will help to prevent bottlenecks in the populations. Glad like everyone else that it doesn't affect foals already born, so will have to go through my pregnant mares and see if I have anything to worry about. Thanks for improving the game so much since I started with regular updates! |
Wayne (#6857) Blue Pacific Racing Posted On: 02/02/24 2:21 am |
That's a bummer; i've been trying to work on a breeding theory called the Rasmussen Factor. This theory involves inbreeding to Superior females within 5 generations through different individuals. I will have to either look very deep in a pedigree now or try a different theory. |

Every new thing I learn about this game makes me even more impressed with it. The complexity here is amazing and the long term work really shows. Super excited for something this challenging, even if I won't be breeding for a while. |

This is a really neat change! I appreciate the depth of complexity that FFH gives us, and I also appreciate that it's going to show up on hypomate. I'm guilty of being a lil lax with the hypomate when matching, but I'll make sure to add it to the routine. |

After getting my breeding skill and doing some matches this year, it became really obvious how helpful it is to have this new aspect shown directly in the hypomate. |
