FFH News
A new year is on the horizon!
Issa (#1)
04/10/22 1:47 pm
Welcome to December - the richest month of the year! We have a packed series schedule this month with World Championship Festival, International Quarter/Paint Horse Championships, Zodiac Zenith, the first leg of Initiate’s Quest, and the first ever Trials of Olympus. This means there’s a little something for everyone, so get your entries in. Even if you’re not sure your horses are good enough - enter them! You can’t win a race you don’t enter and your horses might surprise you and bring home some points and a purse.

Now onto the news you’re actually waiting for - the first round of off-season updates! I’ll start with an overview of a few things mentioned on the sidebar yesterday.

Race preferences automatically reset when a horse goes through any method of ownership transfer. I know everyone’s had times where they acquire a horse and don’t realize for several weeks that preferences are set up wrong. This will ensure you set up their preferences how you want them, rather than how their previous owner had them, and will prevent any accidental carryover of jockey or wrong region.

Driving Trials no longer factor Colt Composure or Filly Power as part of PR. This change is because trials aren’t like traditional races where all the horses are neck and neck. Each horse goes through the trial on their own and is very unlikely to cross paths with any other horse in the race.

We always strive to provide meaningful choices on FFH which ultimately give you multiple strategies to choose from that can all lead to victory. One area that has been lacking is in bringing up young horses. There’s been a scripted formula that most players follow with little reason (benefit) to choosing an alternative path. We want to ensure everyone has a chance to raise young horses in whatever way feels best to them - whether based on their own goals or the needs of the individual horse.

The first step we’ve taken to provide an alternate path for young horses involves changes to Groundwork and Long Gallops. Racers can only do Groundwork prior to being saddle trained, and previously most horses were saddle trained immediately as Groundwork had little to offer. With the changes, racers who do Groundwork can gain Maturity, Prime, and Consistency and also reduce Risk. Groundwork already provides a chance to gain Courage, which could be another boon for developing young horses. Long Gallops now improve Peak and Maturity, making it a natural progression from Groundwork for horses who aren’t mentally or physically ready to race. Horses who take this slower training approach can avoid the use of feeds such as Bloom and Focus. This also means that although horses who start racing later in life miss out on juvenile series races, they’ll have longer careers.

Without further ado, let’s jump into the real thing you’ve been dying to hear! It’s time to talk about Goldblood updates. Please note that none of these changes will take place before January, but are being provided in advance so you can start planning ahead. These will not impact WCF races or any other races or training in December.

Beginning in January, all Goldbloods are beginning their transition process to becoming the unique breed they’ve always been intended to be. Although they’re a fantasy breed, we’ve historically drawn a lot of inspiration for them from Arabians, Akhal-Teke, and even lighter draft horses like Haflingers. We hope those traits will become more evident with these updates.

Goldbloods will have their own unique races not combined with Thoroughbreds. These races will be held at entirely new tracks, which you may have caught a glimpse of already on the tracks page. You will need to hire training assistants at new tracks, but assistant fees will be restructured to be cheaper with this in mind. That said, the more breeds a stable actively races, the stronger their opportunity to earn money in races. Track assistant fees are one way this is balanced to ensure a stable who has every breed doesn’t have huge advantages over someone who focuses on a single breed. In other words - assistant fees will be going down but never going away.

Goldbloods will have a new distance range. For mature horses (4yo+), this is 3-7 miles for a range of 5 distances. 2 year olds will only race at 1-2 miles and 3 year olds will only race at 2-3 miles. Steeplechase races for GBs will be held at 5-7 miles.

Goldblood races will also offer slightly different surface options than you’re used to seeing. Their races will be on sand (functionally the same as dirt), turf, and varied terrain. Varied terrain are races that contain both sand and turf and are suitable for dual surface horses. Unlike tracks for other breeds, GB tracks each offer only one surface. Each region has 2 sand tracks, 2 turf tracks, and 1 varied track. Series tracks, which will still be used for GB series races, are lucky enough to offer all 3 surfaces.

Because each of our breeds has become so unique, each breed will only be able to perform buddy workouts with buddies of the same breed. Stellar races will also be deactivated beginning in Y49, although it’s possible they’ll return if/when breeds fill out competitive G1 fields.

More information will be posted in January about how to get your Goldbloods set up with their new tracks and distances. Rest assured we’re working to make the process as smooth as possible!

Finally, we’re looking for ideas and inspiration for Goldblood series races. A brief overview of our plans will be posted in #community-forum on Discord, and everyone is welcome to stop by and suggest themes they’d like to see for series names and trophies!

I'm looking forward to trying out for the Initiate's Quest this game month. The Goldblood update looks really exciting for players already involved - I think I'll get my feet under me a little more before I start to experiment with different breeds :) Good luck to everyone entering the series races :)

Wow! This is a lot of exciting news and updates. I am really interested to see how the changes with goldblood progress as they are one of the breeds I focus on. The change in surface types in particular, with the inclusion of the ‘varied’ style, is very interesting and I look forward to finding out more information. Since retired TB, QH, and SB geldings are offered at the HT for a discount in response to the new changes, is it possible to also buy retired GB geldings, at least until Y49? I personally find maintaining a decent amount of GB buddies < 12 YO difficult (in fact, I've only got one GB mare who can transition, and two yearlings that may take several years to be eligible). I'm excited for the new GB races though! It'll be nice to change up my strategy with a brand new challenge. Perhaps I won't need to worry about not having GB buddies, since there will be an adjustment period for retraining my GBs anyway.

04/14/22 6:31 pm
Just in regards to the new Buddy Workout rules so does that mean that the HT will be updated to allow us to purchase retired geldings for each of the breeds. I was just looking at updating my Buddies Barn in preparation for the change but noticed you can't get retired geldings for Paints or Goldbloods from the HT. I even checked the sales pages and then doesn't appear to be a lot of them that come up for sale there either. I see you can purchase a retired Goldbloods with a token but you can only select Colt for the sex so you don't know if this is going to be a Horse or a Gelding when you purchase it.

So many of these changes are really great for a variety of reasons, I love seeing QOL improvements because sometimes those can be the most meaningful.

I LOVE the changes to 2yos. I think this will add realism and varity to the game and really make it so we have to think about 2yos and 3yos separately and whether some horses will do better as younger or older racers. I REALLY love that groundwork can now improve consistency in racers, that's something I've been wishing for silently for a while so it's awesome to see it happen.

I also appreciate that Goldbloods are now really becoming their own entirely separate breed. I've always wanted to see endurance "racing" in the game so I'm really excited about that.

Looks like things are moving forward and getting better than ever, excited for Y49!

Really liking the sound of these updates revolving around 2 year olds and the Goldbloods! I never saw a reason to get any Goldbloods previously, but now that they are more distinct as a breed I might be interested in giving them a go at some point. I always found the juvenile series races really exhausting to keep up with, so I'm glad to know I now have more options for training young horses.
